Neurotransmitters

The four emotion producers in your brain are called neurotransmitters. If you’re well stocked in these, you will be in a positive mood and feel like your most authentic self. If you’re deficient in one or more, depending on the type, you’ll experience negative mood states that reflect the deficiencies.

Here are the four mood and emotion-generating neurotransmitter classes:

  1. Serotonin – “Antidepressant” (SSRI drugs)
  2. Catecholamines & Thyroid – “Stimulants” (Amphetamine drugs)
  3. GABA – “Tranquilizer” (Benzodiazepine drugs)
  4. Endorphins – “Painkillers” (Opioid drugs)

A brief look at the high/low results of these four emotion-generating neurochemicals:

  • Serotonin:
    • High: Positive, Confident, Flexible, and Easygoing
    • Low: Negative, Obsessive, Worried, Irritable, and Sleepless
  • Catecholamines:
    • High: Energized, Upbeat, and Alert.
    • Low: Flat, Lethargic Funk
  • GABA:
    • High: Relaxed and Stress-free
    • Low: Wired, Stressed, and Overwhelmed
  • Endorphins:
    • High: Cozy Feelings of Comfort, Pleasure, and Euphoria
    • Low: Overly Sensitive to Life’s Hurt (Emotional and Physical Pains)

This book has been very helpful and inspiring to me in an attempt to quit drinking. Even after reading the whole thing, I pick it up for inspiration. I have chosen to go into outpatient therapy, but the book has helped me stay on track.” – Satisfied Customer
