Every time I download a new song, there’s a period in which I listen to it on repeat. Whatever that song happens to be, it is hands down the most effective motivator for my workouts.

It’s like a full body buzz, with no hangover or toxic residue, that emanates from the music itself and automatically transfers energy into muscle cells.

When the workout is done, I’m often not sure whether my euphoria came from the song or the workout. All I know is that the combination of great music and a great workout beats an artificial booze buzz by a million percent.

Speaking of music, there’s one song in particular that helped me get sober. It was often mischaracterized as a pro-drinking song. But take a superficial glance at the lyrics, and you’ll find that it’s anything but a party anthem. The ominously seductive beat evokes both the danger and powerful appeal of alcohol. Kendrick doesn’t come off as a traumatized victim, but rather as a hardened realist who, as he juxtaposes alcohol bottles with beautiful women, ultimately chooses self-preservation over destructive indulgence.
