Learning To Uncover Desires & Transforming Them Into Purpose

In episode 220 of the Elevation Recovery Podcast, Chris Scott and Matt Finch address how they discovered personal desires, life’s callings, and “going with the flow of life” during their addiction recovery process.

They express how it’s not necessary to have every aspect of your life be perfect in order to begin your recovery journey, but it’s important to have that determination, yearning and desire to get started.

Here are some of the main topics and quotes from this episode.

Allowing Yourself to Live Life With Mystery

Chris says some of the best advice he received was from a priest. “He was very wise. He was like the Yoda of alcohol recovery for me at that point, and I’d ask him all these questions… then at some point after the ten-thousandth question, he said ‘Let there be some mystery in the world. Let some things be reserved for when you’re supposed to find them out because life is more exciting that way.’

“And I realized that was the big answer that I wanted from him, and I didn’t really want to gather all these facts… but what I really wanted was permission to see life as an adventure with some mystery and some magic in it. He gave me permission to do that, and I’ve been seeing it that way ever since.”

Finding Out Your Life’s Calling

“Service to others,” Matt says “is my ultimate fulfillment spiritually and professionally in life.”

“As much as I’ve thought about doing other things and have done other things… there is nothing else in the world I’d rather do. You could pay me twenty million dollars a year, but if it’s something boring and I’m not helping anybody; I’m not improving the lives of other people, helping them to raise their consciousness and break free of addiction, and improve their lives, relationships and emotions… then I wouldn’t care. I really feel like I’m on Earth right now to help other people, and I feel like I had to go through all those challenges (of addiction and recovery) to be able to teach other people.”

Having the Desire to Quit

Matt says that if someone really wants to begin their recovery journey, it’s simple. “Go book yourself into a treatment program, go get some comfort meds from a doctor, do a megadose vitamin-c detox, do some passion flower tea, or a lot of people can just cold-turkey off what their taking without life threatening things.”

“It’s simple when you think about it, but it’s also hard… not only the habit that we’ve conditioned… but it can just go on so long for so many people.”
